Message Replies

Use AI to draft replies to direct messages from the Conversations inbox.

AI Assistant in Conversations helps you draft replies to direct messages quickly without losing your voice. It reads the conversation thread and generates a reply you can edit and send right from the inbox.

Opening AI Assistant for a DM

  1. Open Conversations from the main navigation.
  2. Select the Messages inbox for the account you want to reply from.
  3. Open a conversation thread.
  4. Click the AI Assistant button in the reply editor at the bottom of the thread.

The assistant uses the content of the current conversation as context — including the message you received and recent history — to generate a relevant response based on your direction.

Generating a Reply

Once the assistant is open, you can:

  • Generate immediately — click Create to let AI draft a reply based on the conversation context alone.
  • Add instructions first — type a short prompt to guide the tone or content before generating.

Example prompts:

"Friendly reply letting them know we'll follow up within 24 hours"

"Decline politely and point them to our help docs"

"Thank them for the feedback and ask what feature they'd find most useful"

After generating, review the draft in the preview panel. Click Insert to push it into the reply editor, where you can make final tweaks before sending.

Editing the Draft

Once inserted into the reply editor, the draft is fully editable. Use the AI editing actions if you want to adjust it further:

  • Shorter — trim it down if the reply is longer than necessary.
  • Tone — switch between Friendly, Formal, Casual, and other tones to match the situation.
  • Improve — clean up phrasing and flow before sending.

Tips for Better Replies

  • Let the thread speak for itself. The AI reads the full conversation, so you don't need to repeat context in your prompt — just give a brief direction.
  • Use instructions for tricky situations. If the message requires a specific stance (e.g., handling a complaint or a refund request), a short prompt gets better results than generating without context.
  • Personalize before sending. AI gives you a strong starting point. Adding a name or a specific detail makes the reply feel more human.

Plan Access

Message-reply AI is part of inbox-capable AI plans. Accounts on plans without this feature will see an upgrade prompt when clicking AI Assistant inside a conversation.
